About Infertility Evaluation and Treatment
What is Infertility?
Infertility, medically referred to as infertility, is defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy despite unprotected intercourse for twelve months. If the person wishing to become a mother is over 35 years old, infertility is considered if pregnancy does not occur after six months of unprotected intercourse. This is because fertility gradually decreases after the age of 35; evaluation should begin after a six-month trial period in this age group.
Infertility can be caused by many different reasons in both women and men. Treatment is possible by identifying these causes and selecting the appropriate method accordingly.
Causes of Infertility in Women
The most common causes in women include:
- Decrease in ovarian reserve,
- Alcohol and cigarette use.
In addition, various gynecological diseases can also make conception more difficult. Causes related to the woman can only be clarified through a detailed gynecological and obstetric examination.
Causes of Infertility in Men
- Low sperm quality,
- Reduced sperm motility,
- Structural and morphological abnormalities in sperm,
- Enlargement of testicular veins,
- Azospermia, meaning no live sperm found in the semen,
- Blockage in sperm ducts.
Many other diseases can cause infertility in men beyond these; the above are the most commonly encountered.
How Does Evaluation and Treatment Progress?
Infertility treatment consists of a series of steps specially planned for the couple. To properly design the process, both partners must be thoroughly evaluated; only then can the causes be identified.
After the causes are determined, the treatment method is chosen considering the couple's preferences; thus, a personalized plan is created. Assisted reproductive techniques such as intrauterine insemination may be part of this plan. During the consultation, the reasons for recommending each step, the controls to be performed throughout the process, and realistic expectations are clearly discussed.
Preparation Before Evaluation
Bringing any previously performed hormone tests, ultrasound reports, and sperm analysis results to the first appointment speeds up the process. The length and regularity of the menstrual cycle, past surgeries, chronic diseases, and medications used are also part of the evaluation. Since smoking and alcohol use are among the factors that can affect fertility, it is important to openly share these habits.
How Long Does the Process Take?
Evaluation is often not completed in a single appointment; since some tests need to be done on specific days of the menstrual cycle, the plan may extend over several weeks. Once the cause is identified, treatment options, their expected contributions, and limitations are discussed. It is valuable for the couple to go through the process together, both for sharing decisions and easing the emotional burden. During the evaluation, the reason for each requested test is explained individually; asking your questions without hesitation ensures that the plan is truly feasible for you.
