About Preparation and Guidance for IVF Treatment

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technique considered when other treatments are insufficient or when there is a direct indication. Before starting the process, hormone levels, ovarian reserve, uterine lining, and sperm analysis are evaluated; if there are conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or adhesions that could affect success, these are addressed first. During the preparation phase, expectations, the possible number of attempts, and the physical and emotional burden of the process are discussed openly. The procedure is performed at authorized IVF centers; preparation, guidance, and monitoring throughout the process are provided at the clinic. Success rates vary according to age and cause, and no personalized guarantee of outcome is given.

What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Treatment?

In IVF treatment, one or more eggs are stimulated with medications and collected from the ovarian follicles using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance. The collected eggs are fertilized under laboratory conditions; the resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterine cavity. Completing these steps takes approximately two weeks, a period known as the IVF cycle.

Since the first successful IVF pregnancy, millions of babies worldwide have been born through this method. As experience has increased, the range of conditions treatable with this method has also expanded.

Stages of the Treatment

IVF is a sequential process applied to assist fertility or to prevent certain genetic problems.

  • Ovarian stimulation: the goal is to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. During this period, medications containing hormones such as FSH and LH are used for 8-14 days; hormone levels and follicle growth are closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound.
  • Egg retrieval: when the follicles are usually ready after 8-14 days, an injection of hCG or a similar medication is given to complete egg maturation. Approximately 34-36 hours later, under sedation, eggs are collected from both ovaries using a thin needle in a brief procedure called follicular aspiration.
  • Sperm sample collection: the sample is generally collected on the same day as egg retrieval; in some cases, it may be collected earlier and frozen. The sample is prepared in the laboratory to isolate healthy and motile sperm.
  • Fertilization: in the conventional method, eggs and sperm are placed together in a laboratory dish and fertilization is allowed to occur naturally. In the microinjection (ICSI) method, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg; this method is usually preferred in cases of low sperm count or quality issues.
  • Monitoring embryo development: fertilized eggs are observed to ensure their development is progressing appropriately.

Preparation and Guidance at the Clinic

IVF procedures are performed at authorized centers. The part conducted at the clinic involves evaluation, preparation, and guidance before entering the process. At this stage, hormone levels, ovarian reserve, uterine lining, and sperm analysis are reviewed; if there are conditions that may affect the process such as fibroids, polyps, or adhesions, these are addressed first.

During the preparation consultation, expectations, the physical and emotional burden of the process, and the possibility of needing to repeat the treatment are discussed openly. Since results vary according to age and underlying causes, no personalized guarantee is given; the goal is for the couple to proceed through the process with full knowledge and readiness.

Monitoring Throughout the Process

Maintaining communication throughout the stages conducted at the center is important; medication use, follow-up appointments, and any questions arising during the process are addressed together. If pregnancy occurs after the procedure, monitoring is transferred to the pregnancy follow-up plan, and early pregnancy check-ups are arranged accordingly.

How It Works

The Process

The steps below describe how things generally work at the clinic. Which tests are needed and how the plan is set varies from person to person.

  1. Step 1

    Initial consultation and assessment

We review your complaints, medical history and any previous tests together. The examination is planned after this conversation.

  2. Step 2

    Necessary tests

If an ultrasound, lab work or other examination is needed, we clearly explain which one and why.

  3. Step 3

    Personalized plan

Findings are interpreted together; options, expected duration and any alternatives are shared with you. The decision is made jointly.

  4. Step 4

    Follow-up

A check-up is scheduled to see how things are progressing. If you have questions in between, you can reach the clinic.
