Discharge does not always indicate an infection; its amount and appearance naturally change throughout the menstrual cycle. Evaluation is necessary if itching, foul odor, color changes, burning, or pain during intercourse occur. Since yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and sexually transmitted agents require different treatments, the cause is determined by taking a sample when appropriate. Random use of medications can mask the condition and lead to recurrences. In cases of frequent recurrent infections, facilitating factors such as diabetes are also investigated.
