The majority of ovarian cysts are a natural part of the menstrual cycle and resolve on their own within a few months. During evaluation, the cyst's size, internal structure, blood flow, the patient's age, and symptoms are all considered together; tumor markers are requested if deemed necessary. For simple and small cysts, regular ultrasound monitoring at certain intervals is usually sufficient. Surgical options are discussed for cysts that are growing, have a complex structure, or cause pain. Sudden onset of severe lower abdominal pain may indicate emergencies such as cyst torsion and should be evaluated without delay.
