About Miscarriage (Abortus) Evaluation and Treatment

Bleeding in early pregnancy is common and does not always indicate pregnancy loss. Through examination, blood tests, and ultrasound, it is determined whether the pregnancy is continuing, the source of the bleeding, and treatment options. When pregnancy loss is detected, options such as expectant management, medication, or curettage are considered together with the patient's clinical condition and preference. A significant portion of early pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal causes and do not indicate an error on the part of the mother. In cases of consecutive losses, a separate investigation program is planned.

What Is a Miscarriage?

Miscarriage refers to the termination of pregnancy before the fetus reaches 500 grams and before the 20th week of pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, miscarriages are quite common; two out of every ten pregnancies may end in miscarriage. The majority of miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities in the baby. If this condition recurs, it is called recurrent miscarriage and, if not evaluated, it continues to pose a risk for future pregnancies.

What Causes Miscarriage?

The most common causes related to the mother include:

  • Abnormalities inside the uterus and structural defects of the uterus,
  • The presence of masses such as fibroids and polyps in the uterus,
  • Systemic diseases such as diabetes and thyroid disorders.

In addition, chromosomal abnormalities that occur during the embryo's development process can also lead to early termination of pregnancy. Miscarriages mostly occur because the baby cannot continue its development as it should; the most common cause of this is chromosomal disorders. If there is a defect in the number or structure of chromosomes, the pregnancy cannot continue.

What Are the Symptoms of Miscarriage?

  • Vaginal spotting-type bleeding,
  • Cramp-like pains in the abdomen and lower back,
  • Passing tissue or fluid along with blood from the vagina,
  • Nausea and vomiting related to it,
  • High fever and fatigue.

These symptoms vary from person to person depending on the week of pregnancy and other factors. If there is a secondary disease causing the miscarriage, symptoms related to that disease may also accompany the condition. Those who suspect they are having a miscarriage should consult a gynecology and obstetrics specialist without delay.

Evaluation and Next Steps

It is essential to have a physician's evaluation to determine the causes of miscarriage and to plan appropriate treatment. During the examination, the characteristics of the bleeding, the week of pregnancy, and the general condition are reviewed; ultrasound and necessary tests clarify the situation. The goal is both to safely manage the current condition and to prepare for healthier progress in future pregnancies.

In individuals with a history of recurrent miscarriage, cause investigation is a separate topic; uterine structural problems, hormonal and metabolic diseases, and other possible factors are addressed sequentially. It is also important not to overlook the emotional burden after miscarriage and to establish a follow-up plan where the process can be discussed.

Post-Miscarriage Period

After a miscarriage, the course of bleeding, fever, and pain symptoms are monitored; if fever rises, there is foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding is heavier than expected, do not wait for the scheduled check-up. Before planning a new pregnancy, consulting your physician is beneficial both for completing necessary tests and for proper timing of the process. Remembering that the sadness experienced during this period is normal and seeking support when needed is also part of the follow-up.

How It Works

The Process

The steps below describe how things generally work at the clinic. Which tests are needed and how the plan is set varies from person to person.

  1. Step 1

    Initial consultation and assessment

We review your complaints, medical history and any previous tests together. The examination is planned after this conversation.

  2. Step 2

    Necessary tests

If an ultrasound, lab work or other examination is needed, we clearly explain which one and why.

  3. Step 3

    Personalized plan

Findings are interpreted together; options, expected duration and any alternatives are shared with you. The decision is made jointly.

  4. Step 4

    Follow-up

A check-up is scheduled to see how things are progressing. If you have questions in between, you can reach the clinic.
