About Cesarean Delivery

Cesarean section is a surgical birth method applied when vaginal delivery is not suitable for the mother or baby. The main reasons include the baby's breech position, placental location, failure of labor to progress, and certain maternal health conditions. The surgery is usually performed under spinal anesthesia, and the mother is awake during delivery. Like any surgical procedure, cesarean section has its own risks and recovery process, which are discussed in detail during the preoperative consultation. Since the procedure is performed in the hospital, appointments are not made through this page.

What Is Cesarean Delivery?

Cesarean delivery is the surgical birth of a baby through an incision made in the abdominal wall and uterus when vaginal delivery is not possible or is considered risky. It is performed under anesthesia in an operating room setting. It may be preferred due to reasons such as the baby's unsuitable position, the mother's health condition, or multiple pregnancies.

At How Many Weeks Is a Cesarean Performed?

Planned cesarean delivery is generally performed from the 39th week of pregnancy onward, taking into account the health of the mother and baby. At this stage, the baby's lungs and other vital organs have largely completed their development, reducing the risks of postnatal adaptation problems. Of course, if the course of pregnancy requires an emergency delivery, the timing may change accordingly.

In Which Situations Is It Considered?

Some situations where cesarean delivery may be considered include:

  • Complications arising during vaginal delivery,
  • Placenta previa, where the placenta is positioned over the cervix,
  • Placental abruption, which is the early separation of the placenta,
  • The baby's position in the womb being unsuitable for delivery,
  • The mother carrying an infectious disease,
  • Pelvic or hip bone problems of the mother,
  • Chronic cardiovascular diseases,
  • Presence of masses such as fibroids or polyps in the uterus,
  • The mother having undergone previous uterine surgery.

How Is Cesarean Performed?

The procedure is performed under anesthesia through an incision in the abdominal area. The mother may receive general anesthesia or epidural anesthesia; the choice depends on the mother's health status and anesthesia evaluation. The incision is usually made in the bikini area and is 12-15 centimeters long. After the baby is delivered, the placenta is removed, and the layers of the uterus and abdominal wall are properly closed.

How Is the Mode of Delivery Decided?

Cesarean delivery is not merely an alternative to vaginal birth but a method used to protect the health of the mother and baby when deemed necessary. The decision is made by evaluating the pregnancy week, the baby's position and estimated weight, placental location, the mother's previous birth and surgery history, and current medical conditions together. These factors are regularly reviewed throughout the pregnancy, and the birth plan is finalized after the 36th week.

Postoperative Period

Since cesarean delivery is a surgery, the recovery process differs from that of vaginal birth. Care of the incision site, gradual resumption of movement, and adherence to recommended follow-ups are key aspects during this period. If there is fever, increasing redness or discharge at the incision site, heavier than expected bleeding, or severe pain, medical evaluation should not be delayed. The mode of delivery in the next pregnancy will be reassessed considering the condition of the previous cesarean scar, overall health, and the course of that pregnancy.
