About HPV Test and Result Evaluation
The HPV test detects whether the virus and its high-risk types are present in a sample taken from the cervix. HPV is quite common in the population; most infections are cleared by the immune system within a few years and do not lead to a persistent problem. What is important is to identify cases where the virus remains persistent for a long time and initiates cellular changes. Therefore, HPV positivity is evaluated not alone but together with the smear result and the virus type; types such as sixteen and eighteen require closer monitoring. Based on the results, follow-up, colposcopy, or treatment is planned.
