About Gynecological Laparoscopy (Minimally Invasive Surgery)

Laparoscopy is based on visualizing the inside of the abdomen and performing the necessary procedure through several millimeter-sized incisions made around the navel and the lower abdominal area. Ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, adhesions, and unexplained pelvic pain can be evaluated using this method. In suitable patients, it provides smaller incisions, less blood loss, and usually a faster return to daily life compared to open surgery. However, a history of multiple previous surgeries, advanced adhesions, or certain health conditions may make this method unsuitable; rarely, conversion to open surgery may be necessary during the operation. These possibilities are discussed in detail during the preoperative consultation.

What is Laparoscopy (Closed Surgery)?

Laparoscopy, also known as closed surgery, is a surgical technique widely used today in the treatment of many gynecological diseases. The word originates from Latin, meaning to observe the inside of the abdomen. A rod-shaped instrument with a camera and light source at its tip is inserted through an approximately one-centimeter incision made at the navel; the inside of the abdomen is projected onto a screen.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Depending on the treatment to be applied, two or three half-centimeter incisions are made on both sides of the abdomen, and instruments suitable for laparoscopic surgery are inserted through these incisions to perform the procedure. To allow clear visualization of all structures and to safely conduct the surgery, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas.

Carbon dioxide is a non-flammable gas; therefore, surgical instruments that emit heat and electrical energy can be used safely. It is the most preferred gas in laparoscopic surgeries because it is absorbed by the body without causing harm. After the abdomen is inflated, the internal organs are examined in detail with the camera, and the surgical procedure is completed.

What Are Its Advantages?

Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic surgery offers significant benefits for the patient both during and after the operation:

  • Shorter hospital stay,
  • Smaller incisions and less scarring cosmetically,
  • Less blood loss during surgery,
  • Less pain in the postoperative period,
  • Faster wound healing,
  • Quicker return to daily activities,
  • Reduced risk of wound infection in obese patients,
  • Decreased likelihood of adhesions forming inside the abdomen after surgery,
  • Lower risk of hernia development at the incision site.

What Are the Risks?

The possible risks encountered in laparoscopic surgery are similar to those in open surgery, and in many cases, the rates are even lower. Unlike open surgery, the increase in intra-abdominal pressure caused by the carbon dioxide gas used to inflate the abdomen and obtain visualization can lead to a drop in blood pressure during surgery and, rarely, gas embolism. These situations are very rare with an experienced surgical and anesthesia team.

Whether laparoscopy is appropriate for a particular condition is determined by evaluating the diagnosis, size of the mass, previous surgeries, and overall health status together. During the preoperative consultation, the rationale for the method, expected recovery process, and possible risks are explained in detail.

In Which Surgeries Is It Used?

Laparoscopy can be used in many gynecological surgeries such as myoma and ovarian cyst operations, endometriosis surgery, ectopic pregnancy interventions, tubal ligation, and hysterectomy. The planned procedure, the possibility of changes in the scope depending on findings encountered during surgery, and what to pay attention to during the recovery period are discussed in detail before the surgery. Since the recovery time varies according to the procedure performed and the individual's general condition, the timing for returning to work and daily life is planned individually.

How It Works

The Process

The steps below describe how things generally work at the clinic. Which tests are needed and how the plan is set varies from person to person.

    Initial consultation and assessment

We review your complaints, medical history and any previous tests together. The examination is planned after this conversation.

  2. Step 2

    Necessary tests

If an ultrasound, lab work or other examination is needed, we clearly explain which one and why.

  3. Step 3

    Personalized plan

Findings are interpreted together; options, expected duration and any alternatives are shared with you. The decision is made jointly.

  4. Step 4

    Follow-up

A check-up is scheduled to see how things are progressing. If you have questions in between, you can reach the clinic.
